Park After Dark, Southgate, And The Massapequa Park Summer Map That Just Split In Two

On a Wednesday night in mid-August, a stretch of Park Boulevard between Front Street and the LIRR tracks will close to traffic, a food truck rodeo will set up on the asphalt, and the Spin Doctors will play a free set a few blocks from the same station platform commuters used that morning. If you have lived here more than a summer or two, you know the Village of Massapequa Park has been running Park After Dark for years. What has changed in 2026 is what happens when the street reopens and everyone drifts a mile west for dinner.

The Village Has Two Centers Now, Not One

The food map of Massapequa Park used to have a single gravitational pull, which was the Park Boulevard strip near the LIRR station. That is still where you go on a Wednesday concert night. But between February and June, the Southgate Shopping Center on Merrick Road picked up three new tenants and one full renovation, and the pace of it has been fast enough that neighbors who eat out weekly are still catching up. The practical result for a resident planning an August evening is that Park After Dark and dinner are no longer the same decision. You can now do them back to back, on foot or by a short drive, and treat them as two halves of the same night.

What Park After Dark Actually Looks Like In August

The Village of Massapequa shuts down Park Boulevard to car traffic on specific evenings so that folks can walk, shop, dine at restaurants, visit a food truck rodeo and enjoy live music. The series is free and runs from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. on the scheduled dates.

Two nights remain on the 2026 calendar as of this writing:

• July 29 — Danny Langdon Band, rescheduled from an earlier May 13 date
• August 12 — Spin Doctors & The Posers

That August 12 booking is worth flagging. The Spin Doctors headlined the mainstream rock charts in the early 1990s, and putting them on Park Boulevard with no ticket, no bag check, and no travel is the kind of small-village programming that residents of larger Nassau towns actively envy. Show up early if you want a spot near the stage. The food trucks generally set closer to Front Street, and the retail storefronts along the closed section stay open through the concert.

The Southgate Side, Storefront By Storefront

If you drive west from the Park Boulevard closure and cross into the Southgate Shopping Center at Merrick Road, you land in the second half of the story. Here is what has actually opened, in the order it happened:

Just Salad, 4962 Merrick Road, Unit B. Just Salad opened February 19, 2026 at 4962 Merrick Road, Unit B. It is a fast-casual chain with locations across Long Island, and the Massapequa Park store is open 10:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. daily. The chain has been expanding across Nassau and Suffolk, and the Massapequa Park store sits alongside Long Island locations in Commack, East Meadow, Hauppauge, Huntington Station, Oceanside, Plainview Centre, Port Washington and Westbury. It is not a destination restaurant. It is a weekday lunch that did not exist here six months ago.

Mercato Kitchen & Cocktails, 4958 Merrick Road. Owned by the Bivona family since 2015, Mercato reopened on March 19 after a full renovation. The redesign includes a redesigned 20-seat bar, new booths in the 90-seat main dining room with wood-paneled walls and layered lighting, and updated bathrooms. The project was piloted by Beth Donner Design, which has worked on many Long Island hospitality spaces including The James in Babylon, Arlo in Northport, One10 in Melville and several others. If you have been coming here for a decade and thinking of it as a comfortable neighborhood Italian, the room now reads noticeably more grown-up.

The Granola Bar, 4902 Merrick Road. This one has the strongest local backstory in the group. Co-owner Julie Mountain was born and raised in Massapequa and told Greater Long Island she would have loved this place when she was growing up. Fellow co-owner Dana Noorily said the community response to the Massapequa Park opening produced more positive feedback than any of their other locations, including two Manhattan spots that had not yet opened. Mountain has described the concept as a modern take on the diners she grew up with, and the menu leans breakfast-and-lunch café rather than dinner.

Dario's Pizza, 4952 Merrick Road. Dario's Pizza, the West Hempstead pizzeria known for Roman-style slices and a Philly cheesesteak that went viral, is opening its second location at 4952 Merrick Road, in the former Sgambati's space across from Massapequa High School, and was expected to open by the end of June. By the time you read this it should be open. Roman-style is thicker and lighter than the New York slice you get on Park Boulevard, which makes it a genuine addition to the mix rather than another version of what already exists.

Four openings in a shopping center that most residents have driven past for years without a second look. That is what a village dining scene actually changing looks like.

The Concert Nights That Aren't On Park Boulevard

Park After Dark gets the marquee bookings, but John J. Burns Park runs its own Music Under the Stars series through July and August, and for residents on the south side of Sunrise Highway that park is often the closer walk anyway. The scheduled shows on the 2026 calendar include a Salute to America performance on July 7 at 7:30 p.m. and an Any Way You Want It tribute concert on July 8 at 7:00 p.m. with a fireworks night attached. If you have kids and the 9:00 p.m. Park After Dark finish is too late, Burns Park is the earlier alternative.

For a proper Independence Day evening, the Jones Beach fireworks remain the regional anchor. The 2026 show was scheduled for Saturday, July 4 at 9:30 p.m. at Jones Beach State Park in Wantagh, launched from a barge offshore, running approximately 25 minutes, with music simulcast on local radio. Massapequa Park itself hosts a hometown parade the morning of the 4th at 10 a.m., which is the version residents with young kids tend to prefer.

One Date To Circle After The Concerts End

Once Park After Dark wraps on August 12 and the school year restarts, the next real community day on the calendar is DogFest Long Island, scheduled for Saturday, October 10 at Marjorie Post Park. If you have a dog and you have not been, it is worth the walk. Marjorie Post is a Town of Oyster Bay park, meaning residents get in with a town parks pass, and the event itself is a fundraiser rather than a commercial festival.

Before all of that, the summer calendar's connective tissue is the Massapequa Chamber's Community Street Festival, which ran on June 7 this year on lower Broadway between Veterans Boulevard and Clark Avenue. The chamber typically publishes the following year's date in early spring, so if you missed it, put a reminder on your April 2027 calendar.

How To Actually Plan A Wednesday Night In August

The practical piece, for someone who lives here and just wants a plan:

Start dinner at 6:00 at one of the Southgate spots. Park at the north or south LIRR lot around 7:15. Walk to Park Boulevard, catch the opening set, let the kids run through the food trucks, and be home by 9:30.

A few notes on the mechanics. Park After Dark closes Park Boulevard itself, but the town lots on either side of the LIRR station stay open and free, which is the same parking arrangement the Chamber uses for the June street festival. Bring cash for the food trucks even though most take cards. If it rains, check the Village's social channels before you leave the house because a rain call is usually made day-of.

The bigger point is one that most Massapequa Park residents have not fully absorbed yet. A year ago, a Wednesday night out meant Park Boulevard or nothing. This summer, for the first time, the Village has enough new dining capacity a mile west that a resident's evening can genuinely have two acts. It is a small change on paper. On foot, on an August night when the Spin Doctors are playing a free show four blocks from the train, it is a different village than the one you lived in last summer.
